SPOOM-MA FALL MEETING       October 29-31, 2026

Bucks and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania

CONFERENCE HOTEL: Quality Inn in Montgomeryville, 678 Bethlehem Pike, Lansdale, PA, 18936. A block of 10 rooms (1 King or 2 double beds) has been reserved for check-in on Thursday, October 29 or Friday, October 30. Check-in after 3 pm and checkout by 11 am. Call (215) 361-3600 and mention SPOOM Mid-Atlantic Block for group rate of $128.77 for 1 KING  or $120.27 for 2 DOUBLE BEDS (tax and fees are not included). Rooms must be reserved by September 28. The price includes a complimentary hot breakfast. 

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 ($18/person, does not include dinner)

3:00 pm to 5:00 pm: TOUR OF MERCER MUSEUM, 84 S Pine St Doylestown, PA 18901 This six-story reinforced concrete castle designed by Henry Mercer  offers visitors a unique window into pre-Industrial America through sixty different crafts and trades and a core museum collection of over 17,000 pre-Industrial tools. 

5:15 to 6:30pm: DINNER AT THE WATER WHEEL TAVERN, 424 Old Easton Rd Doylestown, PA. 

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30– MILL TOURS ($75/person for tours/lunch/chartered school bus)

9:00 am to 10:00 am: STOVER-MYERS MILL, 400 Dark Hollow Rd Pipersville, PA 18947 This pre-1750 mill was operated by Jacob Stover and his son Samuel from 1784 to the late 1880s when brother-in-law Christian Myers bought it. Renovations in 1800, 1834, and 1885 added turbines, two additional sets of stones, and roller mills.Operations were powered  by water, gas, and steam till about 1920. The County of Bucks purchased and restored  the mill which is now open to the public seasonally. 

10:30 am to 11:30 pm: STOVER MILL, 852 River Road (PA Route 32) Erwinna, PA 18920 Built by Henry Stover in 1830, original stone sets, equipment, and water turbines remain. When owned by John Stover, a turbine powered dynamo later produced local electricity and phone service. Owned since 1955 by the Tinicum Civic Association and housing a seasonal art gallery, a tour of the mill is offered one day yearly near Labor Day. In nearby Tinicum Park is the Erwin-Stover House, gifted to Bucks County by John in 1955 and now opened seasonally.

12:00 pm to 1:30 pm:  BOX LUNCH AT TINICUM PARK, 963 River Rd, Erwinna, PA 18920

2:00 pm to 3:30 pm: CASTLE VALLEY MILL, 1730 Lower State Rd, Doylestown, PA 18901 In 1947 Henry Fischer bought and began restoration of this 1798 mill on Neshaminy Creek. Third and fourth generation family members continue this process. Period stone milling equipment was salvaged from PA mills to produce the finest stone ground flours and meals which are sold online and on site. 

4:00 pm to 5:00 pm: EVANS-MUMBOWER MILL, 200 Swedesford Rd, North Wales, PA 19454 More than 50 mills clustered along the banks of the 21- mile Wissahickon Creek, producing paper, textiles, lumber, and flour. This site was part of an original land grant to Thomas Evans in 1698. His grandson, Abraham, built a saw mill in 1744. The current structure was built in 1835 by John and Elisa Keefe. Henry Mumbower bought the mill in 1856 and worked it until his death in 1892. His son, David, ran the mill until its closing in 1930.

 

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 – SUNRISE MILL TOUR &  ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ($25 )

9:00 am to 10:00 am: TOUR OF SUNRISE MILL, 3431 Neiffer Rd, Schwenksville, PA 19473 Located along the Swamp Creek, the site contains a 1767 gristmill and sawmill complex and a barn, farmhouse, and stone arch bridge representing 250 years of rural life in the region. From 1918 to 1958, Sunrise Mill was the home of Dr. Chevalier Q. Jackson, a physician whose pioneering work developing the modern bronchoscope helped save the lives of thousands. The mill is completing the last phase of reconstruction.

11:30 am to 12:00 pm: SPOOM-MA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

12:00 pm to 1:00 pm BOX LUNCH
