Spring Meeting 2024 Registration


SPOOM-MA SPRING MEETING
May 9 - 11, 2024
State College and Centre County Pennsylvania

CONFERENCE HOTEL: Ramada Conference Center by Wyndham 1450 South Atherton Street, State College, PA 16801 A block of 10 rooms (1 King or 2 full/ queen beds) has been reserved for check-in Thursday, May 9 or Friday, May 10. Check-in is at 4 pm and checkout is 11 am. Group rate for SPOOM-Mid Atlantic is $129 + tax and fees. Mention Group Code 050924SPO to reserve rooms at (814) 238-3001 or book online. Rooms must be reserved by April 15, 2024. The price includes a complimentary hot breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 am. 

THURSDAY, MAY 9 ($1 per person)

6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EVENING MEET AND GREET: Ramada Conference Center by Wyndham 1450 South Atherton Street, State College, PA.  Meet your fellow SPOOM members and enjoy a cocktail at the bar / restaurant at the Ramada Inn.  Stay for dinner if you like. 

FRIDAY, MAY 10 – SNAVELY’S MILL AND CURTIN VILLAGE ($25/person for tours/lunch)

9:00 am to 10:00 am: SNAVELY’S MILL, 22 Fishing Creek Road, Mill Hall, PA  17751   As one of the oldest continuously operating mills in the country, today Snavely’s Mill uses modern milling equipment.  The historic mill building still stands and houses modern parts of their current operation. During our tour we’ll compare old and new ways of milling flour. 

10:30 am to 12:30 pm: CURTIN VILLAGE,  251 Curtin Village Road, Howard, PA 16841
We’ll tour Curtin Village and Eagle Ironworks, the longest operating charcoal iron plantation in central Pennsylvania’s Juniata Iron District.

12:30 pm to 1:30 pm:  BOX LUNCH AT CURTIN VILLAGE 

1:30 pm to 4:00 pm:  FREE TIME Explore on your own or return to the hotel to freshen up. 

4:00 pm to 5:00 pm: BELLEFONTE, PA ($33 per person for tour and dinner)
Meet at the Historic Bellefonte Train Station (814) 355-2917 in Talleyrand Park.  Park at the Gamble Mill, 160 Dunlop St, Bellefonte, PA 16823 and take the small brick path from the entrance of the mill south (upstream) to the Train Station. View Google map.

Enjoy a 30 minute guided walking tour of this historic Pennsylvania town, known for its Victorian architecture.  The walking tour ends at Gamble Mill where we will learn more about its preservation and the current owner’s modern spin on this historic structure and community focal point. The tour will be guided by local historian, Matt Maris, founder of Local Historia. (814) 952 9343  

5:00 pm to 7:00 pm: GAMBLE MILL, 160 Dunlop St, Bellefonte, PA 16823
After our historic walking tour of the town and mill, enjoy dinner together in this 19th-century gristmill converted into a restaurant and hotel.  (Limited menu for the group included, drinks extra)

SATURDAY, MAY 11 – LEMONT VILLAGE, NAMA MILL &  SPOOM MA MEETING ($30)

9:00 am to 10:00 am: LEMONT VILLAGE The granary and coal sheds are products of the railroad era when locally grown agricultural products shipped to surrounding areas and trains deposited coal. A flower market will take place during our visit. 

10:30 am to 11:30 am NAMA (Nittany Antique Machinery Association) MILL, located at Penns Cave & Wildlife Park, 222 Penns Cave Rd, Centre Hall, PA. Bob McLaughlin spearheaded the construction of this mill for the spring and fall shows held on this site by NAMA, whose members will run the mill.

11:30 am to 12:15 pm PRESENTATION ON ROLLER MILLS by Craig Sansonetti who hails from Muddy Creek Roller Mills, part of the Ma and Pa Railroad Village at Muddy Creek, PA and has provided SPOOM Miller Training on the operation and history of roller mills and milling.

12:15 pm BOX LUNCH and SPOOM MA BUSINESS MEETING at PENN’S CAVE VISITOR’S CENTER Galen Ingram’s extensive collection of flour bags will be on display.

2:00 pm (Optional) End the day with a tour of PENN’S CAVE, 222 Penns Cave Rd, Centre Hall, PA 16828.  Penns Cave is America's only all-water cavern & farm-nature-wildlife park. They offer two fully guided tours: the all-water cavern, given entirely by boat; and the farm-nature-wildlife park tour, given entirely by bus.  (Cavern tours run $14.50 (kids) up to $24.50 for adults and run 45-50 minutes long)  It is strongly recommended that you book your cave tour online in advance as the tours fill up fast and there could be at least an hour wait for a same-day booking.
